Since the last post, a lot has happened. We learned so much more, and also a lot more exciting events happened. We learn more about Ofred's backstory, and we also learn about the ceremony she has to go to. The most major event that had happened since last time was definitely in the part of the book titled "Birth Day." In this part of the book, we get to see how the rare birth ceremony takes place. It isn't Ofred who has the child, or even becomes pregnant, but another woman named Janine. Ofred also gets a personal message a few days later from the Commander, asking for Ofred to come see him later that night, even if it isn't allowed and very very dangerous. Ofred goes, and all they do for most of the night is just play scrabble.
I haven't really seen any type of book, movie, or T.V. show that is anything remotely close to this story. The obvious answer would be to just compare this book to the hulu show adaptation of the book. The only similarity I can possibly see is that the character Moira, does remind me of a character named Rose Hathaway from this old series I used to read a few years ago. The characters are both strong, and don't really have any boundaries when it comes to fighting back to do what's best for themselves. They're both characters that definitely put themselves first when they need to. They're also both pretty cool characters that I can definitely admire. If I could compare this story to real life events, I would compare some of the characters. The character Moira also reminds me of my own sister. They share a lot of the same character traits, and I can easily see much more similarities between them than differences. They're both brave, always managing to find a little bit of trouble, and also pretty strong.

So far in the story i've had to gather a lot about the setting and characters through context clues. I know a lot about the main character Offred, I know that she is what is known as a "handmaid" and i'm slowly learning more about what Offred has to do as a handmaid.
Quite a few other characters have been introduced in these first ten or so chapters, such as: Cora, Aunt Lydia, the Commander's Wife, the Commander, Rita, and Serena Joy. I have read a dystopian novel before! Personally, I actually am finding this one to be a bit more challenging to read compared to some of the previous novels i've read, but I still am actually surprisingly interested in everything thats been going on so far. It's interesting being able to see the different scenes and how Offred ends up changing throughout the novel. This book does take place on Earth! I'm not exactly sure the year or how many years into the future it's set, but I do know it's on our Earth. |
