My career day actually turned out to be a really fun and interesting experience. I had never been exposed to a job or work environment like this before, so it was interesting to compare this environment to things I have previously seen. Everyone was kind and funny, good at communicating and overall creating a light and focused work environment. I also noticed that everyone seemed to be pretty good at organization, writing notes and creating task lists. Sometimes they'd write them on sticky notes, other times they'd be written on the walls. All around the office were walls that people could write on like a whiteboard, whether it was to take notes or make plans, the walls seemed to be a big part in their organization and work tactic.
On Friday, I asked Edgar Espinosa (the man Breanna Jones and I were shadowing for the day) a few questions, and these are the questions I ended up finding most interesting. What in your educational backround most prepared you for this job? In college, Edgar had done a work study in an I.T. department, and he said it gave him the hands on experience he needed. It was one of the more important things he did in college, and it ended up really helping him in the job that he's in now. We then asked him what the most important rules or practices that he musy follow in order to succeed in the field he's in now. Communication was the key, he had said. Without communication, so many things could end up going wrong. At the office everyone must be communicating, and talking to eachother about what tasks or servers they need to build. Communication is also really really important when some thing major like a server crash occurs. It's something that requires teamwork, and sometimes patience. Then, we asked Edgar what advice he had for people interested in his profession. His advice was for people to keep at it, study and learning the craft is something that's important, and will benift you in the long run. He also said a big part of his job was to learn by doing. Going back to the first question, the work study he did back in college was something that helped him learn, it was hands on, and that "learning by doing" was extremely helpful. The next question was, to what extent do you find your work interesting and why? Edgar really liked the reasearch and new and innovative technology. It's something that was exciting and challenging to him, it really requires him to stay on his toes, ready for any new updates or things thrown his way. This last question was something Bre and I ended up seeing throughout the day, but before we actually did see it, we had asked him how he interacted with people during his normal work day: The office was small enough to where you could just walk from desk to desk if you needed to ask a quick question. Or, if the question required more of an audience, Edgar told Bre and I that he would email. Although, if the question related to one of their other offices in Singapore or Amsterdam, there would be a skype call that would require someone to give up their morning or night due to time changes.
