For this second internship meeting, I talked to Diego Diaz about his internship experience. It was interesting to hear about his, considering everyone I talked to previously worked at the high school and shared similar experiences to me. It was really cool getting to hear about someone else's experience outside of a school environment.

Date/time of meeting and how the meeting was held
Friday Jan 17 2. Choose two other people who were on your conference call. For each person, please provide: a. Their first and last name Sarah H., Melia D. b. A description of where their internship is (name of business/organization, location) Both Melia and Sarah worked at High Tech Elementary North County. Although, Melia worked with all grades in the art classroom, and Sarah interned with Ms. Larson's first grade classroom. c. An explanation of the type of work that is done at business/organization Sarah expressed that she really enjoyed the classroom that she was working with, and Melia agreed that Sarah's class was one of the best behaved. While Sarah worked more with one specific group of kids like I did, Melia got to see all different grades of students and really got to see the different levels of education. d. An overview of the project they are undertaking at that work site (the objective and how they will be meeting that objective) Both are working hands on with kids by planning lessons as their project.
I think what strikes me the most is how wonderful and kind everyone is. There is not one teacher, adult, or student who hasn't been anything but sweet and welcoming. All of the children in the class I work with are all so unbelievably unique and funny, they all give me lots of hugs and just genuinely make my day. The students listen to the teacher and treat her with nothing but respect, and all treat one another the way they want to be treated. The classroom is always clean and it's covered in adorable student work.
Every teacher I've met has treated me just like they would any other adult. I'm not looked down at or viewed as any different than they are, and that's always something that I truly respect and appreciate. It's great seeing the teachers and school work together and I can't wait to see a bit more how they collaborate in the next few weeks while I'm here. It seems like they all have such a wonderful dynamic.
For internship this year, I will be working with a second grade class at High Tech Elementary. I've wanted to work hands on with children in a classroom setting and I think a school like High Tech High is the perfect place to begin. I think High Tech is a wonderful school with great ideals and I think that I could learn a lot from seeing those ideals applied in an elementary school setting. I even feel that I could learn a thing or two from the children as well.
I will be working with Ms. Jen Street as my mentor this year. She has been teaching for six years now and is originally from the bay area. As of now, I'm a bit unsure on what my project is going to be. Going into a classroom setting, I assume I am going to do a lot of teaching assistance. After my intial discussion with Ms. Street, I'm confident I will be able to easily keep up with the tasks she needs me to do. Ms. Street even told me I could teach a lesson myself to the class which is something I could easily see myself do. I'm excited just to get some hands on experience in a classroom not as a student. It'll be interesting to see the classroom experience from a different point of view, that's not necesarily |
